Dean E. Auman

July 9, 1934 — March 10, 2023

Dean E. Auman, age 88, a lifelong resident of Dover, passed away Friday, March 10, 2023, in Dover’s Park Village Healthcare Center.

Born July 9, 1934, he was the son of the late George F. and Esther Morgenthaler Auman. Dean attended grade school in Winfield (a.k.a. Pinchy Tech) and went on to graduate from Dover High School in 1952. He married the former Marjorie Stealey, who survives, on July 25, 1954; the couple would have celebrated 69 years of marriage later this year. Dean was a farmer and lumberman nearly all of his life. In the late 1940’s and 50’s, he and his father, George, ran a large milking operation and had one of the first pipeline milkers installed in Tuscarawas County. In the 1970’s, Dean turned from farming to full-time logging and operated the Auman Sawmill. He manufactured pallets for industry as well as providing hardwood for local craftsmen.

Dean was a devoted family man, and member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, as well as the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau. He and Marjorie shared a long-time love of horses and trail riding and were founding members of the Buckeye Trail Riders. The couple made many good friends through their years with the BTR.

In addition to horseback riding, Dean also enjoyed camping, playing golf and his life as a gentleman farmer providing for his horses in his later years.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Marjorie; his children, Susie (Bill) Rice of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and Terry Auman of Dover; his grandchildren, Lynn (Nick Grigorovich) Rice and Leslie (Christopher) Hirgelt; his great-grandson, Ian Hirgelt; his sister, Julia Phillips; his niece and nephew, Debbie (Jerry) Dummermuth and Douglas Phillips; and his cousins, Larry Auman and Sheila Auman, and Sheila’s children, Marcia Harding, Jeff Auman and Bonnie Auman.

Besides his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his niece, Diane Phillips, and his cousin, Curt Auman.

The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people at Park Village Health Care Center of Dover for providing Dean with such kind, patient and loving care over the last several years.

Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Dean’s life on Thursday, March 23, 5 - 7 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. A private service will be held later with burial of his cremated remains in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia.
