Bessie E. Baker

February 8, 1913 — May 16, 2007

Bessie E. Baker, 94, of Dover, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 in the Park Village Health Care Center.

The daughter of the late George & Grace Seibert Smitley, she was born February 8, 1913 at Mineral City.

She took great pride in the fact that she was a homemaker. She loved her family dearly, and was proud that she was “always there” to tend to any and all needs. As a mother of seven children, it was also important that she was a good cook! She delighted in providing great meals for the entire family, often including items freshly picked in the family garden, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Bessie was also a woman of faith. She was a member of the Dover Alliance Church, and for many years, while her own children were younger, had volunteered in the nursery.

On February 1, 1993, Bessie suffered the loss of her husband, Floyd D. Baker, Sr. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

Surviving family members include: five sons, Floyd (Retha) Baker, Jr. of Dover, Charles (Melba) Baker of Canton, Jerry Baker of Warren, Bob (Kathy) Baker of Dover, and Ron (Cheryl) Baker of New Philadelphia; two daughters, Shirley Baker, and Mildred (Richard) Myers, both of New Philadelphia; 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; two sisters, Marian Hupp and Opal Such, both of Dover; and a step-brother, George Kreiger of New Philadelphia.

A funeral service celebrating Bessie(TM)s life will be held Monday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral home & Crematory, Dover with Pastor Tim Steiner officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Following the burial, a meal will be served in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard.
