Alfonso H. "Al" Ray

Alfonso Huffman Ray was born September 29, 1945 in Dover, Ohio. He was the tenth child of eleven children born to Buford Sr. and Beatrice Huffman Ray. He went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 in Oakpointe Nursing Center at Baltic, Ohio after a brief illness.

Al excelled in sports as a student at Dover High School. He lettered in basketball and track. He was known for his "patented jump shot" and outstanding ability to get rebounds. He was prolific in track and field. He won the low hurdles event at the Quaker Relays in 1964. He also ran the 100 yard dash, was a member of the relay team and high jumper. He was recognized with a trophy as Dover's Outstanding Trackman of the Year. Upon graduation from Dover High School in 1965, Al worked at the Marlite Company in Dover. He played basketball in the community industrial league, raced motorcycles in events around Ohio and attended the Tuscarawas Branch of Kent State University. After working at Marlite for several years, he entered the U.S. Navy and served two years on active duty.
Alfonso was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn and five brothers, Charles, Philip, Napoleon, Buford Jr., and Clabe. He leaves to cherish his memory three sisters, Darlene Byrom, Catherine Kelker and Diana Lynn Jones; one brother, Richard Rex and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
