Alexandra ''Mama Greek'' Tsantis

Alexandra “Mama Greek” (Caracasto) Tsantis, 87, of Dover, Ohio peacefully left this world at 3:45 am on September 30, 2002.

Born in the mountains of Northern Greece on March 14, 1915, she came to the United States in 1952 and married Stephanos John Tsantis (deceased). They operated Tsantis Antiques for 22 years.

She settled on Tuscarawas Avenue in Dover and raised two sons there plus opened her home to all their friends as well. A seamstress who made her own clothes, she bound her family and friends together with love, understanding, and guidance.

Well known for her delicious cookies, baklava, pizza and salad dressings, she operated Mama Greek�(TM)s Pizza and Gyros from 1985 to 1989 with her son, Jimmy.

An avid bingo player, she shared her pastime with a special stepdaughter, Joann Petrella of Dover.

She will be greatly missed by sons; George (Annette) Tsantis of New Philadelphia, Jimmy Tsantis of Bolivar; Two grandchildren; Ashley and Kayla of Bolivar; sister, Demetroa of Greece; Stepchildren Joann Petrella of Dover and Mary Lou Kiehl of Napa, California along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends from here and abroad.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephanos John Tsantis; two sisters, Georgia and Sanyo; a brother, Jimmy Caracosto and stepchildren Bill (Big Greek) Tsantis and John (Buddy) Tsantis.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 11 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover with Rev. C.G. Shiepis of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Massillon officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 6-9 pm with a special prayer service at 7:30 pm.
