Obituary for Richard A. McCoy

Richard A. McCoy, age 78, of Sherrodsville, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 24, 2017, in his home.

Born November 19, 1938, in New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Robert A. and Dorothy E. Cox McCoy. Richard graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1956, and went to work for New Philadelphia’s Warner & Swasey Co. He married Patricia Pearson, who survives, on January 31, 1960. Richard was later employed by Union Hospital, Dover, Rea & Associates, New Philadelphia, and retired from Dover’s Allied Machine.

Richard was a “people person” and was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 510, New Philadelphia, and a former advisor for Junior Achievement. He enjoyed working around his home and yard, antiquing, sports (especially O.S.U.), tractor pulls and old cars.

Richard was a devoted family man. Whenever possible, he involved his sons in his activities, and they were taught from the get-go to work hard and respect others. He did his best to set them in the right direction.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by his sons, Brent A. (Kiran) McCoy of Dublin, and Tal S. (Donna) McCoy of Dover; his grandchildren, Ashley (Joe) Flynn and Brandon McCoy; his great-grandson, Sam Flynn; his brother, Robert (Pam) McCoy; his half-sister, Debbie (Terry) Cook; his half-brothers, Stan (Bonnie) and Steve (Susan) Zimmerman; his step-sister, Leonia Smith; his step-brother, Skip (Sara) Zimmerman; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his step-brothers, Don and Gerald Zimmerman.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 29, at 3:30 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover; Pastor John Morris of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Dublin, will officiate. Immediately following the service, there will be a dinner in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., with B.P.O.E. 510 conducting rites at 3:15 p.m. To sign an online guestbook and share a fond memory of Richard, please visit the obituaries link on the Toland-Herzig website.
