September 17, 1931 — March 27, 2018

Olive M. Gilmore, age 86, of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018, in Aultman Hospital, Canton.

Born September 17, 1931, in Barnesville, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Hartley Hall. Olive graduated from West Lafayette High School, and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in education from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. She married Russell Dean Gilmore on August 19, 1955, and the couple shared fifty-nine years of marriage prior to Russell’s passing on November 24, 2014. Olive taught for over thirty years, mostly the third-grade, in the New Philadelphia School District. She retired from the district as a reading interventionist.

She was a faithful member of the New Philadelphia Nazarene Church, having taught Sunday school there for nearly forty years, serving as vacation Bible school director, board secretary, and as a member of the missions society. Olive was a prayer warrior, who was committed to daily heartfelt prayer for others. She had an excellent memory and was a loyal friend.

Olive loved to quilt, which she did until poor eyesight prevented it. Additionally, she and Russell were members of the Model A Ford Club of America.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine (William) Wantland of Howard; her granddaughter, Heather Leigh Wantland of Lexington, Kentucky; her brother, William Hall of West Lafayette; her sisters-in-law, Wilma Fulton of Cadiz, Selva Gladstone of Dover, Lenora Thomas of Newcomerstown, and Verna LaPorte of Tippecanoe; her brother-in-law, Clyde Gilmore of Dover; and her many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, and her beloved husband, Russell, Olive was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Margaret Jane Gilmore; her sister, Arlene Clark; and her brother, John R. “Bob” Hall.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 5, at 11 a.m., in the New Philadelphia Nazarene Church, with Pastor Mark Maddux officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. Family and friends are invited to call at the church on Wednesday, April 4, 4 – 6 p.m. Olive’s family asks that those planning to attend bring along a fond written remembrance of her to share.
