Ida Edith Deceuster

Ida Laner Deceuster, 93, of Dover passed away early Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover.

Born March 6, 1925 in Uhrichsville, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Minnie (Gasperaso) Laner. On March 1, 1947, she married the love of her life, Ralph Joseph “Joe” Deceuster, who preceded her in death on May 9, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her brothers; Carl Laner, Leno Laner; and her sisters; Trinda Wardelle, Angie Klepa, Lena Davis, and Ann Burnhouse.


Ida graduated from Uhrichsville High School with the class of 1943. During WWII she joined the Cadet Nursing Corp from 1943 until 1946. She served at the Army Fletcher Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio. She then worked at Aultman Hospital and Massillon City Hospital, where she started the recovery room. She continued her hospital nursing when the family moved to Highland, IN in 1959. She retired from nursing in 1973, spending her last 10 years as a high school nurse.


She was a Girl Scout Leader and a 4-H Leader for 25 years in Highland, IN. She also taught Sunday School. She and Joe returned to Dover in 1982. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dover. Ida enjoyed being active in community projects. She was a life member with the Union Hospital Auxiliary, North Star Social Club, where she served as a past president, and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, and playing cards; especially bridge.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter; Connie (Dr. James) Karlowicz of Dover; two sons, Kenneth (Maureen) Deceuster of Southern Pines, NC, and Joel (Madeline) Deceuster of St. George, UT; nine grandchildren; Jason (Marcie) Karlowicz of Dover, Josh Deceuster of Los Angeles, CA, Leah (David) Price of Greenville, NC, Christian (Gina) Deceuster of Valencia, CA, Ben (Rachel) Deceuster of St. George, UT, Andrew (Jessica) Deceuster of Logan, UT, Daniel (Michele) Deceuster of St. George, UT, Ethan (Tiana) Deceuster of Ivins, UT, Anna (Thomas) Williams of Murray, UT; her 23 great-grandchildren, William “Will”, Alyssa, Ava, Alyvia, Luke, Alana, Donovan, Cassandra, William, Alex, Marisa, Addison, Logan, Caleb, Ian, Claire, Zachery, Brynlee, McKenzie, Jackson, Andrew, Katelyn, and Evelyn; and her many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ida’s life will take place at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 11:00 am with Pastor David St. Aubin officiating. Immediately following the service, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Burial will follow at a later date next to Joe at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday, July 12, 2018 from 6-8pm.
