January 12, 1942 — June 7, 2018

Edwin S. “Ned” Wertz, 76, of Dover died on Thursday, June 7, 2018. Ned was born on January 12, 1942 in Wooster, Ohio to William H. H. and Bonnie Jean (Foster) Wertz.

Ned graduated from Wooster High School in 1960 and Ohio University in 1965. He then served as an officer in the United States Navy assigned to the USS Arlington. Ned returned to Orrville and worked for Crown Steel. He moved to Dover and was employed by Marlite. Ned was a national sales manager for Invincible Vacuum, regional sales manager for Ramco, a partner for Canal Dover Wood Products, and he owned Addys Red Barn Refinishing. He was also the regional sales manager for Whitmer Company of Cleveland.

Ned was a charter member of the Bryce Browning Izzak Walton League, who planted dogwood trees throughout the Dover and New Philadelphia area. He was past member of the New Philadelphia Elks. As a member of the Dover Exchange Club, he helped organize the first Canal Dover Days. As a volunteer for the Rainbow Connection, he directed the first telethon and received the Helping Hand Award. Known to some as the curmudgeon of the county, Ned was a frustrated golfer and an avid Ohio State and Steeler football fan.

Ned married the love of his life, Margaret “Maggie” Riley on November 26, 1968. Together they had one child, William “Will” HH Wertz IV. Will and his wife, Carissa along with Ned’s two grandchildren, Harrison and Foster, live in Camby, Indiana. Ned was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Maggie enjoyed traveling to Camby to watch Harrison and Foster play football and spend time with family. Thanksgiving was a special time for Ned, as the family gathered in Dover for a weekend of renewing old friendships, football, and grilled turkey.

In honoring Ned’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. The family is planning a memorial gathering at their home at a later date.
