John is the president and third generation owner of Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. and partner with his wife, Joyce in the operation of the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.

A 1970 graduate of Dover High School, John received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ashland College in 1974 and is an honors graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He earned the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice in 1976, becoming one of the first funeral directors in Ohio to be so named.

In addition to serving hundreds of families over the years, he has also been involved in numerous civic, community and church organizations. He is a lifelong member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover where he formerly served on church council and Treasurer. He currently serves as a Trustee of Union Hospital where he is a member of the Finance, Quality Improvement, and Development & Community Relations Committees. He also serves on the Citizens Bank Board of Directors, member and past president of United Way of Tuscarawas County, board of directors of the AAA of Tuscarawas County, Past President and member of the Strasburg Lions Club, member of the Dover Rotary Club, and the Tri County Funeral Directors Association. He is past president of numerous organizations including Hospice of Tuscarawas County, American Cancer Society, Past Exalted Ruler of the Dover Elks Lodge, and formerly served on the boards of the Tuscarawas Chamber of Commerce and Salvation Army Advisory Board. He has also served on numerous committees of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association over the years.

John enjoys boating at Atwood Lake and his ongoing collection of famous funeral memorabilia (Famous Endings.)

John is married to the former Joyce Dallau and resides in Dover. The couple has three children Trevor, Troy (wife, Marcie) and Tricia (husband, Joel) McKinnon; six grandchildren Kylan, Alyssa, Ava, and Alyvia Herzig and Jack and Stone McKinnon. Herzig also has a sister, Peggy (husband, Rick) Holmes.
